Teaching Composition at Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover

Since 2010 I have been teaching instrumental composition at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater and Medien Hannover and since 2015 I have been acting head of Incontri, the HMTM-Hannover Institute for New Music (https://www.incontri.hmtm-hannover.de/de/start/). In addition to weekly individual lessons and composition seminars, we organize several projects each year that involve collaborations both inside and outside of the Hochschule where new works from the composition class receive their premieres. Recent external guests have included Musikfabrik, Trio Surplus, hand werk, Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart and Séverine Ballon and our students have had their works performed at prominent festivals such as the Kunstfestspiel Herrenhausen, Musik 21 Festival, Klangbrücken Festival, Donaueschingen Next Generation Festival. We have collaborated with the cello, flute, percussion and trombone classes in recent years, with concerts in the Sprengel Museum Hannover, Herrenhauser Garten and the Christuskirche in Hannover. A notable highlight in 2018 was the EARTH#SKY#SPACE project, which featured 8 premieres of vocal works from the composition class (festival flyer as pdf). Graduates of our composition program have gone on to pursue further studies in composition in Germany and abroad (ie. Cologne, Karlsruhe, Stuttgart and Paris), won major awards and residency scholarships (ie. Composer stipends from Lower Saxony, Lauenburg or Schloss Solitude), and won teaching positions in Korea, Germany and Turkey.

From 2011 until 2016 I ran the ‘Werkstatt Junger Komponisten’ program in Lower Saxony, weekend workshops for youth interested in learning more about contemporary music. The workshops featured guest composers such as Marc Andre, Johannes Schöllhorn or Fabio Nieder with guest ensembles and musicians (Das Neue Ensemble, the Flex Ensemble). Workshops and seminars covered topics such as instrumentation and analysis or improvisation. Later editions allowed for individual lessons and the creation of new works that were premiered at the end of the workshops by guest ensembles. Several students went on to study composition in pre-college programs and in Hochschule in Germany, all gained valuable insights into the world of contemporary music.
